Tuck Adds Center For Middle
Management |

Dean Danos announced this morning that Tuck will add a
new Center for Middle Management, to complement Tuck's
existing efforts in corporate governance, private
equity, technology, and citizenship. According to
Danos, "The dirty little secret in the world of
management is this: Behind every successful HBS
entrepreneur are 4-6 Tuckies running solver. It's
high time that we focused Tuck's efforts in this
regard."
Tuck's reputation in this field is currently
unparalleled, as evidenced by the annual Wall Street
Journal rankings, which measure corporate recruiters'
level of satisfaction with MBA hires from top business
schools. According to Journal writer David Corningstone, "Tuck is well-known as the best source for
good looking, fairly intelligent, risk-averse, team
players who will not rock the boat or try to 'change the
world,' in other words, exactly what corporate America
is looking for. It does not surprise me that Tuck
would attempt to capitalize on their already strong
reputation in this area."
As part of the effort, the core curriculum will be
expanded with a new offering: “Analysis for Middle
Managers." According to Dean Pyke, "This course is
really a synthesis of all the techniques introduced in
other core classes, and that are not found on the
syllabi at Harvard. Harvard graduates will need
these skills at their disposal, so we are training
tomorrow's middle managers to provide those skills."
As an example, one class session will be dedicated to
“Kissing up and kicking down to get ahead.” Mid-level managers from mediocre companies such as
Baskin Robbins, The Sports Authority, and the Atkins
Institute have already been lined up to share their
experiences in the trenches of middle management.
Which students are likely to gain from this course?
According to reputation expert Paul Argenti, "Anyone who
thought Robin Gilchrist should seriously investigate
purchasing the inflatable raft company should also
seriously consider taking this course."
In addition to the curriculum changes, the Center will
sponsor several tall, grey-haired, "CEO-like" men in their 50's to spend the day in various restrooms
and elevators throughout Tuck. The
goal: to help Tuckies improve on their CEO level
interactions, which usually occur in restrooms or
elevators.

Finally, the Center will host seminars on various topics
related to middle management, from "Maximizing Utility
at Mediocre Office Cafeterias," co-sponsored by Dining
Services, to "How to Operate a Postage Meter."
The Career Development Office is in full support of the
new Center. According to Director Richard McNulty,
"We expect the Center for Middle Management to help our
efforts to place those students who are clearly not cut
out for investment banking or consulting." |
