The Trails Come Clean: "We
Always Leave Our Kids Home Alone" |
Hanover,
NH: In yet another shocking Tuck Profit discovery,
Matt and Martha Trail admitted that they have
never hired a babysitter for their kids. Over the
last 2 years, the Trails have attended scores of social
events in the Upper Valley, astounding fellow Tuck
students and partners with their ability to maintain a
vibrant social life, even while taking care of 2 young
children at home.
Apparently the Trail's carefully constructed robo-parent
image was merely a facade. The couple spent hours
searching for quality baby-sitting services in the White
River area, to no avail. After sitting home the
first few weekends of Matt's first year, they decided
that a social life was more important than "following
every rule in the book."
The couple's first adventure was a Murphy's Trivia Night
during Fall A. They left the house after putting
the kids down to sleep, returning home a few hours later
to find them still in bed. According to Martha,
"We left a bottle by their bed and a note in the kitchen
with the phone number for Murphy's. It's not like much
can go terribly wrong in 3-4 hours."
After a few successful trips into town, the couple
started to really believe in the non-babysitter model.
"One weekend, my brothers came up and we rented a place
at Stowe. That was probably the longest we ever
left our kids home alone. But we left plenty of
food in the refrigerator, just in case."
Matt Trail defended his parenting style: "On average it has
worked out. The worst incident was when we found
our son standing in the toilet after we came home
trashed, and I needed the toilet to boot in."
Martha Trail also rationalized their behavior: "Building
a network is probably the most valuable part of Tuck's
MBA program. How are we supposed to do that if
we're always sitting at home playing with our children?
This is really an investment for their future."
