Wharton Grad: Where Is He Now?
A Day In The Life with Jonathan Masland
Associate Director, Career Services

8:45 a.m.  Woken by the thunderous snoring of Putin Proust T'06, who passed out on my couch last night after a wicked bout of Pong.  Putin’s up here for some recruiting thingy, so we took full advantage of his expense account at Murphy’s last night.  Ouch.

9:00 a.m.  I crash out of bed.  25 push-ups later, and I reckon I’m pumped-up enough to go have coffee with one of the Beckies.

9:30 a.m.  Slightly concerned with my “job description” as posted on the Tuck Center for Private Equity PE Center website, I email Jenna Atwood to ask them to strike that bit about “leading international recruiting initiatives” and “entrepreneurial career paths.”  Not comfortable with the false advertising.

9:45 a.m.  Personal time block in Outlook.  (quick rendezvous with my X dealer at Lou’s)

10:00 a.m. My calendar says “work time.” It should take me a good ½ hour to forward some TuckStreams job postings to the finance clubbers.

10:45 a.m.  Personal time block in Outlook. (look into swingers’ club happenings in White River Junction).

11:00 a.m. Head over to the Center for International Business.  Lisa Miller and I like to commiserate over how diplomatic visionaries like us Lauder grads ended up in this cosmopolitan hotbed of Hanover, NH.  We debate current topics like world peace, the UN food program, Angelina & Bono, and Darfur.  This is where my A-game really comes out to play.

11:45 a.m. Personal time block in Outlook.  (cat nap)

12:00 p.m. Attend Citigroup company briefing.  Alienate campus reps by falling asleep in the back row of GM classroom during presentation.

1:00 p.m. Compile and send the ‘good guy’ list to Dusty at Goldman.

1:30 p.m. Delegate my more pressing tasks (industry briefings, mock interviews, company relationship building) to co-chairs of the Finance Club.

Tim Hannan showed me how to use the CDO shoe shine buffer on my skull, which is a great massage for the 'ol synapses.

2:00 p.m. Meeting with Admissions to advocate strategy of admitting more students with banking experience, who want to go back to banking.  I just don’t see where they are coming from with these “class diversity” issues.  The career switchers we end up with are just such a hassle.

2:30 p.m. Note to self:  Encourage those first-years who did not receive I-banking internships to apply for the Blackstone and KKR postings.

2:45 p.m. Personal time block in Outlook. (transcendental meditation)

3:00 p.m. Ask magic 8-ball some questions – source of all enlightenment.

3:45 p.m. Personal time block in Outlook (Nanette gives me a pedicure).

4:00 p.m. SLAM session with Investment Management candidate.

4:25 p.m. convince SLAM session candidate to “just go into I-banking.”

4:45 p.m. Personal time block in Outlook.  (3 olive martini)

5:00 p.m. Phwew.  I successfully avoided McNulty all day.  Head over to Buch for some legendary pong.
